Type of Report: Lake
Report: Similar to last year, Lake Erie has
reverted back to old tricks. Two weeks ago, water
temperatures began to rise. After days of constant
north and northeast winds, the nearshore water
temperature is at 47 degrees and offshore the water
temperature is 45 degrees.
By the weekend, bass anglers should have success
at Hammermill or by working the shoreline east to
Shade`s Beach. Best tactic for the current cold
water is a slow presentation with jigs tipped with
minnows. Start at 15 feet and continue to 30
feet.
With the current water temperature, finding the
steelhead and lake trout may be tough. I found huge
schools of baitfish near North East Marina and
offshore. If weather conditions allow, start
trolling in 70 feet and keep trolling patterns
north to south. Locate the baitfish and keep spoons
or plugs around 35 feet.

Report: Fished the bay this morning, from
around 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Marked a lot of fish but
couldn't get them to hit. Threw everything but the
kitchen sink at them. Saw about 4 other boats in
the same area, but didn't see anyone landing
anything. Tried to get out on the lake but too much
wind and large waves stopped us. Does anyone know
if the smallies are up at northeast yet? Have fun,
but remember, BE SAFE!!!!! J.J.

Report: Saw the picture of the carp that was
caught at the gravel pits. I remember taking the
kids there to feed these fish. They used to come
right up to the shore and the kids would throw them
bread. For the past few years these fish became an
icon of the gravel pits.
I'm not going to tell the kids they were fattening
them up for the anglers.

Report: Great place for kids! Live minnows
equals SLAMMIN EM.Thanks to Warren and Ray our
adopted grandpas. These guys were the epitomy of
what its all about. Before we knew it our six year
old girl was bringing in a 12 in. brown on their 12
ft. noodle rod.The fish and rod proved too heavy
and she needed help. "Grandpa" was right there and
you should have seen her face! Not too bad for
a"Drearie Erie" day.Four kids took 10 fish , put
three back, and lost???? Who knows. Here's to more
guys like this!!!!

Report: Thanks to all involved in this years
stocking. This is a great location to take your
kids.Started out with worms and meal worms, four
kids, one "cold" wife and little patience. The kids
showed up the wife landing several nice browns and
refreshingly many brooks. The best part of the whole
day??? Warren and Ray,our adopted grandpas. These
guys came in and were just slamming them. Obviously
the kids curiousity got the better of them."Watcha
usin Mister?"These men were the epitomy of what its
all about. Instead of getting upset with their
enthusiasm they genuinely encouraged it. Before we
knew it our six year old little girl had a 12 ft.
noodle rod in her hand bringing in what turned out
to be a 12 inch brown.Between the rod and the fish
she couldn't even pick it up on the bank."Grandpa"
stepped in and helped to be gratified by her
squeels of delight. Not too bad for a gloomy
drizzly "dreerie Eeerie" day.

Location: North pier of the bay
Date Fished: April 22, 2000
Type of Report: Bay
Report: I started fishing for steelhead just
before 9 in the morning. The steelhead seem to be
moving out of the bay. I figured there still might
be a group of fish leaving the bay through the area
of north pier. On my third third cast I hooked into
a nice steelhead using jig and maggots under a
bobber. The jig
was set between 10 and 12 feet under the bobber.
From 9 until 2 in the afternoon I hooked 2 other
steelhead and missed two other bobbers that went
under. I figure the steelhead season can be
extended at least another week fishing the north
pier area. Good luck to anyone trying this
area.

Report: Warm sunshine and calm waters
greeted Lake Erie anglers this weekend. Near shore
water temperatures are at the magical mark of 50
degrees. However, two miles off shore, water
temperatures are still in the 40 to 44 degree
range. Bass action has started off Shade's Beach
and in front of Hammermill. Best Tatic is a jig
tipped with a minnow and slow presentation. Cold
off shore water temperatures are keeping the
steelhead and lake trout scattered. I talked to a
few boats that were running downrigger gear and all
reported scattered releases. Weather permitting,
smallmouth bass fishing will be in full swing by
April 22. Anybody hoping to try the nighttime
walleye fishing should be able to make plans for
the beginning of May.
