From the President

Jim Pfendler

I’ve invited Marsh Young to attend our February meeting, to discuss the Chapter’s interest in adopting a portion of the South Branch of French Creek as a  possible project water.  Many consider Marsh the preeminent authority on the upper tributaries of French Creek and I’m sure he can enlighten us on the diversity of French Creek and answer any questions we may have.

Trout in the Classroom – Update

Submitted by Bill Angelo

The following note was sent to Bill from Amidea Daniel

Hello Bill,

The program is doing GREAT!!!  We have two tanks set up, one with 3 adult brookies and one with the 200 swim-up fry, and everyone is doing well!  So far the students have planted 200 native trees and shrubs along Kettle Creek, they have learned about what a watershed is, they have created their very own riparian planting plan (using math, reading, writing), they have learned about the different PA trout and which one is the only native (the brookie) along with where the brown and rainbow are native to (rainbow = western US and brown = Europe).  In the upcoming weeks they will be introduced to geology and its importance to watersheds, soils and its connection to watersheds, forestry and its connection to watersheds, trout anatomy and much, much more!!!

We will be also tying into the program FLYFISHING and Fly Tying!!!  The tying will follow the aquatic insect program and the casting will follow the fly tying a week later.

In late April or early May we are planning an open house event for all supporters, that includes Erie Casting Club and Northwest TU, along with the community to attend.  Students will have displays of different things they learned throughout the school year, a presentation about their experience and much, much more!!!  Refreshments will be supplied.  This will be an evening program so maybe this trip could be tied to a day on Fishing Creek with George!!!!  WE will be recognizing all supporters of the program at this event and would really like to see you there!

Please visit the Renovo Elementary website to see updated photos of the program!  The Kettle Creek Website will soon have updated information as well, but not until our webmaster returns from holiday break.

There will be a list of all supporters on our site and will soon be on the Renovo website.  Also, the project has received a lot of press already.  There was a huge article in the Record and the Lock Haven Express about the planting day and the announcement of the program.  Most recently there was a huge FRONT PAGE article about the program in the Express and the Williamsport Sun Gazette!!!

SO I THANK YOU, ERIE CASTING CLUB and NORTHWEST CHAPTER OF TU FOR MAKING THIS ALL POSSIBLE!!! IT is YOU and your groups that really got this program rolling!!!!

I hope to hear or see you soon.  Take care and good luck fishing!!

Amidea Daniel

AL'S KRAZY GLUE SPLICE

Contributed by Erik Cronk

Pour finger nail polish remover (containing acetone) into the cap and put at least 3/8 inch of the end of the fly line into the liquid and let it soak for about 20 seconds before
stripping the coating of the fly line off with your finger nail. Then trim the exposed core to about 3/8 inch and enlarge the hollow core with a larger than normal pin-I use an old hat pin. Push the butt of the leader up into the exposed fly line core and wipe a drop of Krazy Glue onto the connection. Wet your thumb and forefinger and roll the connection around. Wipe a second drop on the opposite side of the connection and again roll the connection around to thoroughly penetrate the connection with glue. Do not use too much glue. Al Caucci, who developed the splice, said to be sure to use the Original Formula Krazy Glue (with a K) in the leak proof, air tight case from Borden. Some other CA glues, such as Zap-A-Gap, have failed.
