Instructions

Never touched a fly rod? That's O.K. First timers will receive basic fly casting instruction and learn roll casting and overhead casting in an angler friendly environment while on the water. I have taught fly casting at Sage Casting Clinics, so you can be assured of getting professional instruction and helpful advice.

You will also learn double haul, shooting head, and running line techniques when conditions and tactics warrant their use.

Various conditions and even different sections of a pool, riffle or run will require specific technique, tackle and tactics in order to hook up. We may rig up with indicators, micro-shot and a Steelie Soft Hackle Fly in order to take suspended steelhead in pools. Running lines are used for deep, fast moving runs and when casting shooting heads. Tungsten based leaders and steelhead taper lines are great for swinging flys through tailouts. Whatever the circumstances, you will be given the best opportunity possible to hook into fish.

On Presque Isle Bay, stripping flies along weed lines drop offs, and rocky bottoms will induce most strikes. Various retrieves are used, from a stop and go strip when using clousers and other weighted fly's, to an all out speed retrieve when trying to trigger big, aggressive pike. Many fish will even eat the fly on the drop. Most fish will simply trash your fly, leaving no doubt as to when to set the hook.
