Matt asks:

Capt. Dave,

I was wondering what type of sonar do you use? Do you have a sonar/GPS combo or do you have 2 separate units? Which do you recommend? I was thinking of buying the Lowrance X91 or the Lowrance LMS 240. What's your opinion on these?

I was also curious as to what brand of downrigger you use, as well as some features you like or would like in a downrigger. I currently have 2 older electric units that have seen better days. I am interested in purchasing 2 new ones, they all seem to come with pretty hefty price tags.

Thanks for your time.

Matt

Captain Dave's Response:

Hello Matt,

Currently, I'm using two GPS units and one sonar. I use the Lowrance GobalNav 310, which is an older unit, as a plotter, and the Furuno GP31 for all my navigation. I have never encountered any problems with any unit; but I prefer two just in case one goes down, plus I like to have a plotter screen visible at all times.

The sonar I use is the Lowrance X65. Even though it`s a lower priced unit, it performs flawlessly. After some practice, I was able to distinguish the thermocline, baitfish, and by using echoes (not fish symbols), I can identify most fish.

You could spend a small fortune on sonar, but the X65 or X85 will do the same thing as the higher priced units.

As far as downriggers go - the Cannon Uni-Troll is the best. Sure, at times, I would like to have a electric downrigger, but even after all the fishing I do, my Cannons Uni-Trolls still work and look like new. Don't buy electric, they`re too expensive and with the motors, wires, and plugs it`s something else to break. Besides, if you do decide to switch to electric, the UNI-Troll can be adapted for a motor.

Good Fishing,

Capt. Dave Adams
