 Location: Elk
Date Fished: 9-30-99
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Stream was up and muddy. A lot of fish surfacing at the public access area near the lake. Saw one landed and two get off. Didn't have any luck myself though.
The next couple days should offer better results. Originally from Johnstown PA, now living in West Virginia. I WAS pleased with the sportsmanship I experienced today and even mor pleased with the kind and helpful service (and fishing advice) that I got from ELK CREEK SPORTS shop.
I am looking forward to spending more time fishing for the steelheads!!! Hope to spend some time on Elk next week. GOOD FISHING!

Will try again tomorrow. Very high winds at Trout run some fishing in the marina saw none landed. Oh well I did enjoy the moment of just being there the lake was beautifal in all it's power and never ending rolls and waves.
Good luck and don't pollute the grounds police your area and let's keep it clean

Type of Report: Lake
Report: Fished Walnut Wed. and 2 friends and I landed a 3 and released them all. These were caught on powerbait and skien. It rained Wed evening till Thursday morning Erie got 3-4 inches of rain! Now you will not have to fight the crowds as fish should be to Route 20 by this weekend!
Trout run had 500 plus fish in it Thursday morning so alot of fish have come into the streams with this rain. I saw 3 fellows catch and release 20 fish and they were all caught with fly rods. I have no problems with people from Erie and treat all like I would like to be treated.
If someone yells FISN ON, Check to see if they are close and pull your line out so they have a chance to land the fish. They will do same for you. GooD Luck 2all & tight lines!

Type of Report: Lake
Report: Hi guys, posting this hoping that Dan got his e-mail. Anyhow I didn't post my last report to offend anyone. I was mearly pointing out a violation of the law. Just for your information I spend just as much time in chest waders as I do my boat. I was not happy at the flagrant violation that I observed and think that each person has their own technique for fishing for steelhead. Lets just say this though I'm a Police Officer and next time maybe I'll give the Fish Commission a hand and call these violations in and testify in court against a few of ya violators. This is a sport not a game of have to catch, have to catch.

I'll be happy to answer any of your questions in person on 10-6-99 at Trout Run. I'll be there without my boat and hopefully catching steelhead with everyone else

We got some rain last night which helped but not enough. the temp. is supposed to be cooler this week which will spread the fish out more

Report: Another great day of fishing was had again yesterday, despite the negativism of a few reports below. I'm from Pittsburgh and find that fishing elbow-to-elbow can sometimes be a hastle, but with the current low-water conditions at Walnut, the hastle MUST be part of the sport. Patients, Courteousness, and true Sportsmanship are what it takes to participate in the excitement and truly enjoy yourself. I realize that most fisherman, including myself, prefer the serenity of a quiet stream; however, the excitement of a dancing steelhead, along with the true camaraderie of friendly fisherman make this the most exciting fishing available locally.

The heavy rain of yesterday should ease the tension of a few fisherman, as I saw numerous fish move upstream when the water levels increased with the southerly winds.

As I mentioned, I enjoyed another great day of flyfishing. The sucker spawn and san juan worm proved to be best. The smaller the better -- size 18 and 20. The murky water conditions just upstream from the wall prior to the first new hole allowed for heavier tippet (3x)which in turn provided for a few Kodak moments.

Let's all catch and release.

Fish On!

Dave

Report: Hi folks. I hope the early season has been good to you so far.Todays rains should swell things up and move some new fish around. I've been reading this report for some time and I've profited from some knowledge and cringed from some of the negative finger pointing. Fishing is a quiet peaceful sport. At least for me. The only time I lose patience is seeing things like the blatent snagging of a certain group at Walnut on tuesday. Oh they got busted hard. They were so obvious that someone must have reported it. Good for them. Sometimes I'll fish for days without success but its still not enough for me to resort to this behavior. If your hungry I will give you a fish.
I enjoy this sport and will give space to share. Its a respect to shout FISH ON as well as reel in when someone nearby is yelling the same thing. It helps to keep us untangled. Use my net anytime..............Ron

Report: I would like to say that this forum is a good one for me. I AM from Pittsburgh and drive up many times during the season. It seems that there has been more negative comments on this site this year than ever. I am one of the easy going fisherman usually at trout that will gladly give you 6 inches of my 12 inch space to cast your fly, egg, skein, power bait or whatever. I was up on Sunday and picked up old line, a few cans, etc. It's not fair for some of us to degrade those from Pittsburgh. There is bad people everywhere. I spend a nice chunk of change when I come to Erie helping the local economy. My fishing buddy, my girlfriend and I respect the waters of Erie as if they were in our backyard. To those of you posting degrading comments about various scenarios or people, please stop. I don't enjoy hearing about these things when I log on to find out about the steelhead activity. Some of you guys should be hosting the WWF. Fishing should be fun. A little curtosey goes a long way. See ya Monday. Bob.

Report: stared fishing saturday morning on walnut at the hole above the wall, had a couple of hits but no luck. They were cathing them on wax worms on top though. Then i moved to the middle of the wall between the marina and the stream had some hits right there but nothing although the guy next to me was catching them left and right on the darker green power bait. I left about 2:00 p.m. but came backe at about 5:00 p.m. to the hole at the end of the wall, we started catching them about an hour or so before dark every five to ten minutes there was a hook up. They were cathing them on any kind of power bait, single eggs, and skein. The next morning i got there about 8:00 a.m. i miss a few then around 10: i caught the first and biggest one an 8 lb 25 incher(of course i used a bathroom scale) and a girth of 17 inches, then i caught a 24 inch 6 puonder(female) and lost a couple more. All in all i had a great time and will be there this weekend again.
Good luck to all the nice people i met up there and all the uniontown people that go up.

Report: Left Pittsburgh 11:30 Saturday night. Arrived at Walnut at 1:30 Sunday morning.
Started fishing in 10 minutes. The wall was packed and there was no room on it. So me and my brother fished where the wall ends.
Got only hits before day break, the guy next to us was catching'em (he was in front of the hole). At day break we started catching them on power bait. My brother limited by 9:30 and had to stop fishing. Mean while my dad had got the boat from Poor Richards and was readying it. he fished off the mouth of walnut and trout run and caught nottin. None of the boats where catching anything. By 4:30
the fishing slowed down and we decided to go home. By then i had landed a 24 inch 7 pound male steelhead, and lost 15. At least i got a good fight and the line was going bad. Good luck and leave NO TRASH AT THE CREEKS PLEASE the new holes are nice and my dad picked up a ton of trash and put it in the dumpster.

Good luck

Report: Amen Fred...even though there are some fish, the streams have absolutely no water (with the exception of the mud hole at Elk). And, the mudhole can't sustain much pressure because the water is relatively low there as well. If people really care about the future of these streams, they should forgo immediate gratification and wait until the water levels are higher. The true sportsmen and women will do this. And I'm not referring to people from other areas--this is a situation that affects us all.

Peace to all...think about these comments...are YOU an offender???

Report: My wife and I, along with a couple of good friends came up to Erie, Pa. from Thursday to Sunday. The fishing was hot and cold.
My wife and I arrived Thursday evening to find my buddy Paul and his mother sporting a 5 and 10 pounder! However, the fishing had died around two in the afternoon. Friday was excellent. My wife, which never caught a steelhead before, Had ten good hookups and landed her first fish, a 6-7 pounder. I had about 12 hookups, landing 2 3 and 5 pounds. The fish were biting all day. Saturday was a different story. People werer everywhere and the fishing was slow to nonexistant. But, from Saturday night around 8 pm untill Sunday morning 3 am, the fish were really on. I had 21 hookups and landed 13!!! My buddy and his mom shoould have stayed, but they went home Friday afternoon.

May your hook never bend,

Report: Nice day to be out. Hooked eight at Trout run, lost them all. White power bait seemed to work the best. Sad to report though, that the unsportsman-like conduct seems to be starting up again. If you can't handle the crowds or your language, please fish in the pen, or go elsewhere.

Walnut has a good bit of fish in each hole, but with low water, and practically no current, they weren't biting. Hope for some rain, or I wouldn't be surprised to see some of these fish move back down to the mouth if they are able to do so. The commission has done a nice job with the new holes, lots of more places for the fish to hold.

Heard that Elk has some nice fish in around the mouth and up to the access area, but none any further upstream.

Report: I drove up from the outskirts of Pittsburg for a few hrs of steelie action. I wanted to check out the new holes at Walnut while the water was low and noticed many people fishing and catching nice sized steelies. I went to my favorite spot (Elk) and tried my luck for a bit after it got done pouring rain. I hooked into one about 22 in. I released mine for someone else to enjoy. It took a mini foo and maggot. I saw many more caught, big ones. Good luck and remember keep only what is needed, there is still alot of season left. Tight lines and good fishing.

Report: My nephew Mike and I had a very successful day fly fishing Walnut Creek. Hook a boatload of fish just up stream from the wall prior to the first hole. And overheard comments from the gallery, i.e., "I can't believe these guys!", "what are they using for bait?", etc. Thought I'd share our technique hoping you can be as successful.
Small sucker pawns (size 18-20), #5 tippet, yellow, orange, or any combination of bright colors (red, yellow, orange, green) worked for us. Mending your line downstream to aid in creating a good drift was key to our success. As you know the steelhead are very subtle when they take your bait, and if your indicator hesitates even slightly during the drift I'll bet the fish has taken your bait. I'd like to thank the nearby fisherman who retrieved their lines as I called "Fish-On". You made the wall-to-wall fishing enjoyable.
Hope to see you streamside

Report: There are some fish in the manchester hole.Probably 75 or so,but they have already been hooked up pretty bad and the water is really low again. The rain we had this morning didn't do much. Most of the fish that were in the new holes below the bridge have either been taken out or moved back down into the mouth. There are still a few but not many and after this weekend I'm sure there probably won't be any.I heard good reports coming from the mudhole on elk, this will probably be the best bet because it can handle large crowds.Right now I would say that the streams are even lower than they were this time last year, and that sucks.I doubt that we will see any fish above the manchester hole.

Report: I started fishing at about 11:00 in the afternoon. The water was a little lower today than the past few days, and a lot less muddy. I saw quite a few fish in the holes and just as many fisherman. The fish seemed to have lock-jaw and were pretty spooked. I moved up to the "chutes" section and found a fish in the white water behind a rock. The fish was eager to take my fly probably because it hadn't been harassed by anyone else. A nice 23' female released to swim again. There's a lot of fish in the stream but it's going to have to rain before the action really gets going.

Report: I fished near the first trench on Sat. and Sun. Sat. we caught 3 steelhead and 1 walleye. We also lost 3 more steelhead when they ripped off my lures. Walleye are fun to catch, but hearing your drag being spun off your reel and seeing those steelhead jump is great.
On Sunday we trolled for about 4 hours and didn't get a bite. Then we decided to do a little perch fishing. We caught about 10 perch when I saw my rod jump up and down. I was repairing another pole at the time. I went over and picked up the pole waiting for the perch to bite again. We were in 55 ft. of water. The next moment an 8-10 lb. steelhead leaped out of the water right in front of me. I tried te reel up the 55 ft. of slack in my line but he was faster than me. I lost the fish but is was the most exciting 90 seconds of fishing I can remember.

Report: Just to let the person who asked about the pen know. There isn't much water in there to hold fish even if it is open. The lake is really low this year. Some fish are in at the mouth of Trout run, but they have no were to go. Just to give you an example. A 6 foot person can wade out well past the wall of the "pen" and not have to really worry about going over their chest waders.(waves two feet or less of course) Rain would be a blessing...

Report: My son & I drove up Sat eve & fished the Walnut Wall with no bites. The area needs rain badly and the Accuweather 90 day forecast says rain will be above average which is good.
Primarily we drove up to see the work on Walnut & it is beautiful. Early Sun we fished Trout Run & a few were hitting, and fewer were landed. I nagged my 15 year old son to be mentally ready at all times for the hit & make sure the drag is set correctly. He had a hit & I looked up & the drag was singing. He kept pressure on & I was so exited for him that by the time I grabbed our net, another kind fellow had the fish netted for him. I had several soft hits, but none on. We used eggs.
A bonus we stopped at Pymatuning on the way home & I caught a really nice 7# Channel Cat on a Little Cleo.

Report: Fished Trout Run at about 8:00 AM. Talked to a fisherman who had been there since daybreak. He said he saw a couple Jacks caught but nothing decent all morning. We fished about an hour and a half among 30 other guys. Not one fish hooked while we were there. Went to Walnut to witness the elbow to elbow fishing at the Marina. Among ?60 - 80? or more fisherman we saw a total of two steelhead on stringers and one steelhead on. It seems like there are a few fish coming in and out but getting one on your line, well it pretty much a lottery and your chances seem pretty slim. When the rain comes then things may change. A lot of anxious and excited fisherman hopping to luck into a Steelie but the run just has not started yet. Hey I can't blame them, it was nice being up by the lake but I'm putting my rod away until the run starts. Got a chance to see the Walnut stream improvements. The new holes on Walnut look fantastic. They carved through the solid rock and deepened and widened the main channels in three holes up from the lake. They make three beautiful runs. They look very natural and not at all the behemoth impression I got from several pre-construction descriptions, just three decent sized holes. Seems like they'll make an excellent place for the steelhead to hold in. Good luck, tight lines!

We only landed 1 Steelhad about 24", but we had alot of hits. The fish were being caught pretty regular until about 8:00. Nothing super fast, but enough to keep you on your toes. The fish were not being real perticular to any one color of Power Bait and they were hitting on nightcrawlers as well. Good luck and tight lines.

Unfortunately, last night, although as beautiful as a post card setting as I sat on the last corner and looked out to the Erie Ocean, produced no fish. There was one thrill in hearing a young boy farther upstream yell "Hey DAD I got one and it's a big one." I didn't see what or how big, but it wsa great to hear him. Talked to a couple of other people. One young gentlemen, stated that he caught a 10 pounder at the mouth on Monday night. I did hear a few jumps, so there are some big ones moving. The water was not really flowing well so it was quite muddy, but a nearby lady stated that she did see a big one moving.

Report: Lauched out of Northeast marina on 9/4/99, went out to 105ft and trolled off the riggers
for bout 5 hrs and only had 2 hits but no fish. It seems like the walleyes don't like northeast anymore. Went into 40ft and tried for smallies and they weren't biting ether.
It was a bad day at northeast even the sheephead weren't biting and thats bad.
On 9/5/99 we went out of Walnut creek access and tried trolling for steelies out in front of the launch area, hoping that they were starting to stage but we didn't find any steelies, so it was a bad day at Walnut too.
The parking setup at Walnut creek is terrable
and need looked at by the fish commision. There were trucks and trailers parked just everywhere, some were even taking up two parking spaces, they should start giving parking ticket to some of these people then maybe they will think twice the next time.
There is room there for everyone if some people don't take more than thier share.
Good luck and keep your lines tight.

Report: OK you land lovers, my son and I spent a few weeks on the lake. There was not a day we did not fill the cooler with big eyes. Bonie at the Wallnut Access shut my 13 year old off from citations. The fishing was on a hunt basis until this later August when a school, at-least one mile long and one mile wide moved in off the creek. If you fish in them you get a lot of anything. The secret is to get out to the edges of the school and let the big ones. The stealies are staging at the 1st trench and Jacks are moving in to the creek. Last weekend we went to Olcot NY and got blown off. Returned to Erie and it was furious. Returned to the Burg to get the kids in school. We used crawler harnesses of all colors (mostly watermellon single blade colorado spin). Our fish came off of the riggers set at the 55 ft. range trailing 75 ft. of line. The large dipseys were set on 3 with 150-160 feet of line out. Most of our fish came off riggers. There were soooooo many walley out in the first trench, you had to catch them. This is the Labor Day Weekend and we are giving the fish a break. Probably will return next week to look for a home. Yes, I am moving to Erie to start a life revolving around the outdoors. We may charter children, veterans or just tie flies. Whatever, it is off to the place in the sun for us. I am out of state and will return soon. I wish you all good fishing and bid you farewell until.

Report: Hey, sorry this is not a report. I would like to know if anyone can tell me the best kind of float and hook and bait size for Steelies. Caught one last year out of two trips on PowerBait, just luck I think. If someone could help I would appreciate it.

Location: Walnut Creek
Date Fished: 09/01/99
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Fished 7 miles northwest 305 degrees out of Walnut Creek. Caught 12 Eyes and a bunch of everything else. Marked a lot of fish over a very large area. Single hook "Litttle Cleo" with a trailing skirt off the rigger down @ 45 ft. worked the best.

Location: North Pier
Date Fished: 08-30-99
Type of Report: Lake
Report: Went to the north pier and slammed the gobies! They were hitting everything, worms, minnows, grubs. I took my nephew and they had a blast. I am not to sure about eating these little monsters, but we have been keeping them and putting them in my neighbors pond. Does anyone know how big they can get?
