Report: Got a late start and found a pack of boats all grouped up in Misery Bay. No sooner got fishing than boats all dispersed. They must have caught a few crappie early but we were too late. We did catch 5 largemouths 17-19 in. Pretty colored fish. Had one pike bite-off. Fun day but nothing for the deep-fryer. KL

Location: Elk Creek
Date Fished: March 27,1999
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Randy and I fished from the Legion Hole up to Rt. 90. I landed three, Randy landed two. All the fish were from six to eight pounds, some dark and colored while a few were bright chrome models! Not many chromes though.

Lot more fishermen & women than fish. More suckers than steelhead. All the steelhead were in the holes during the normal daylight periods when the sun can shine down on the creek. But when the sun is at a low angle, they did come out of the holes to their reds.

Minnows (salty) and minnow patterns seemed to work the best, with eggs or egg patterns next. Sure could use some rain to bring in more fish though.

Caught smolts at the I90 bridge. Remember to crimp your barbs to give these little guys a better chance of survival. These little guys are your steelhead in two years, so treat them gentle!

Tight lines, and remember to catch and release as much as possible.

Report: Fished walnut creek from the marina to the tubes at route 5. There were some fish in the marina being caught but no fish in the creek up to the Manchester hole. There were a few fish in the hole but there were more fisherman than fish. Worked my way up the creek to the tubes at Rt 5 didn't even see a steelies moreless hook one.
It seem like the fish have spawned and have head back out into the lake. Well try again in the fall. Keep your lines tight and good luck.

Type of Report: Stream
Report: Fished Elk Creek early Wed. morning. Fished from Folly's End down for about a mile. Had little luck except for small smolts. A kind man gave me two sucker spawn flies (thank you very much) and I fished back up. I started hooking large steelhead immediately! Having the right fly and some local knowledge was a real help. Thurs. morning I again started out early, it was very COLD...my guides iced badly but I had plenty of sucker spawn flies this time. I hooked a large steelhead almost immediately but it broke off. I hooked a ton of little smolt but on the way down it was slow and cold. When the sun came out and I headed back UP...it was much better. I saw fish, hooked and landed fish and ended the morning with a LARGE female....a great day. I found the other fishermen friendly and helpful. I'll be back again!

Report: Hey everybody!
I am comming up from MD to rasle some steelies in elk creek. I love this sport! And admire and respect all you local Erie fisherman. I was wondering how the streem conditions were expected to be for Sat and Sun. If anybody can fill me in I would greatly appriciate the info.. If there is any Taxidermists out there, I am the guy who invented the fish scale detail tool sold in most supply catalogues, its called Mac-Z-Scaler and the deer nose texturing tool called Dan-D-noser. I designed them mainly with steelhead reproduction in mind. Oh well, hope to see ya all Sat and Sun fight'n the steelies! GGOD LUCK!

Date Fished: Thursday the 25th
Type of Report: Stream
Report: I fished for about 3 hours. The water was clear and seemed to be low. I didn't have any luck in the main hole, not even a hit. I then proceeded to walk downstream and fished the holes under the bridges. I am happy to say I only caught one about 27 inches, 6 1/2 lbs(a small one compared to some I seen taken). You are probably thinking oh just one fish, but it was MY FIRST STEELHEAD and not the last I hope!! Thank you to everyone that has given advice on how to fish for steelhead!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!

Report: For all of the local fishermen who are getting on the "out of towners". I fished the Manchester hole for about 5 hours with foo jigs and maggots with no success. amazing to me was most of the fly fishermen where catching fish. the trick was the fish came in backwards imagine that. But best of all most went on stringers. I saw 1 fish get caught in the mouth using a single wax worm and it was released. I think a few more people should practice what they preach on the stream instead of on the fish report page.I'm from southwestern Pa. and we don't fish like that here! To all the true sportsman out there good luck and keep the good fishing ethics that you have.

Location: Upper Elk
Date Fished: Wed., March 24
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Fished upper Elk for a short time late on Wednesday. Fished the area upstream from the West Road bridge (the road at McKean Exit of I-79 that passes over Elk) up from the Elk Creek Inn.

Weather was just above freezing with a cold wind. Water was mostly clear in the riffles and murky green in the deeper pools. With polarized lenses you could see most areas of the creek except the deepest pools. The creek is dropping but the level was good Wednesday.

Observed a good number of fish. Most were in the tail-outs of the pools, but some were in the riffles spawning. They could be spotted with good glasses.

Picked up one large aggressive male and missed one, both on white sucker spawn size 14 flies (although color did not seem to matter much).

Good Luck!

Location: Let me make a point
Date Fished:
Type of Report: Lake
Report: I was the one who brought up the question "What is a "muphere"". And yes I did ask if they were like " The gortex hatch". Actually I don't fish in gortex I fish in a Helly-Hansen micro-weave jacket that cost me over $200...I can afford it, and I'm not jealous.

The point I was making with the gortex hatch "joke" was this...I have fished Ohio and Michigan streams for steelhead for the last 25 years. I don't mind new fishermen...and I'll be honest I don't love them as there are already a lot of people on the water. But, a well behaved newbee is a great thing. I would and have offered advice, tackle, and technique to many a person on the river. And I will continue to do so. The person I refer to when I say "gortex hatch" is the "fisherperson"(females too) who are dressed up in a thousand dollar get up, fish with a loop and a scott, have no streamside manners. They leave trash all over, crowd you out of the hole you're fishing, etc..... We don't need to get mad at each other because someone is fishing here and living there. It's a free country. Each one of us has the right to fish where ever he/she want's. Don't argue...Go fishing...It could be worse, you could live in England where you can't even fish some streams unless your the prince of this or the duke of that.

Enjoy the fishing, put up with the crowds, or go during the week. Find a diffrent stretch of water to fish. All the streams I've seen reported on here have thier "In Town" or "Easy Access" spots and of course they'll be crowded. Buy yourself a good map and spend one of those crowded saturdays driving up and down the stream looking for those out of the way spots...God knows I've found many on the Grand, Conneaut, Elk...etc...Just don't ask me where they are. If you do I'll tell you to buy a map.

That's just my two cents worth.

Report: Cant we all get along? I grew up fishing lake Erie Streams for salmonids/steelhead, therefore visit this site often to see how fishing is in my home town waters. I have been extremely disappointed at the amount of arguing that occurs over locals-vs-nonlocal, well equipped fisherman-vs-not well equipped, bait-vs-lure/ fly, and etc. Great lakes steelhead fishing has gained incredible popularity over the last few years. It has attracted fisherman who differ in fishing techniques, education, and socio/economic backgrounds. It's popularity will only increase with the increasing population and the declining salmonid runs in the Pacific Northwest. Therefore, instead of arguing we need to take measures to educate the public on how to protect this valuable resource. We can argue forever, but it wont get us anywhere or stop the fisherman/woman from coming. So, the next time you observe something that makes you mad, take steps to educate yourself on the matter and then lead by example. It's a long process, but will go allot further than senseless bickering.

Report: First, the people that are complaining about people coming to Erie to fish, should show some respect. If there was steelhead fishing closer to our homes do you think we would drive 2 to 3 hours? To the person who asked if mupears are like a goretex hatch that occurs in New York. I would rather be warm & dry than cold and wet. If you cant afford technology, dont get jealous at the people that can.The person that responded to the man from Washington Co. Learn to type and spell. We have a lot of fine schools in Pittsburgh that teach that stuff.Fishing is for everyone!! not just locals. I guess you people bitchin, must never go on a vacation !! or leave your town for anything! Come to think about it, I really can't stand the fools that come to OUR Steeler games and act like complete drunks form up north!!

Report: I am a steelhead fisherman that takes my steelhead fishing very seriously. I am from washington PA and I only get to come up to erie every once in a while. I use this page to see how the fishing conditions are for the day that I am going fishing and not to here everyone complain about other fisherman. I know that not everyone is an expirenced steelhead fisherman and they do some stupid things, but we need to try to help these people learn. We don't need to start fighting with each other. I am really getting tired of people that get to go fishing every week submitting reports on this page about the people they see when they are fishing. I feel bad using this page to write this letter but I feel that this is the only way to get my point across.
Well good luck everyone and good fishing!

I am also looking for a 16 ft. Lund boat or something comparable to that style of fishing boat. I want to use it for in the bay and maybe out in the lake on some calm days. If any of you have something like that you would want to sell or know of someone who is please email me and let me know. I would appreciate that.

Barb's Meatloaf with Cheese

Serving Size : 1 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Beef

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
1 pound Ground beef
1/2 tablespoon Pepper
3/4 cup Cheddar cheese -- cubed
1/2 tablespoon Celery seed
1/2 Onion -- chopped
1/4 tablespoon Paprika
1/2 Bell pepper -- chopped
1/2 cup Milk
1 Egg -- beaten
1/2 cup Bread crumbs -- dry
1 tablespoon Salt

OVEN TEMP: 350 DEGREES MIX ALL INGREDIENTS TOGETHER. PLACE IN LOAF PAN. BAKE FOR 1 HOUR 15 MIN. *I LIKE TO FORM THIS IN A BALL AND PLACE IT ON A RACK TO COOK, SO THAT MOST OF THE FAT DRIPS AWAY FROM THE MEAT. THIS MEAT LOAF MAKES GREAT SANDWICHES AND IS FLAVORFUL WHEN COLD.

Report: I had a great day on Sat. I hooked into 10 beautiful steelies and landed 9 of them. The fishing gods must have been with me. The biggest one was 28 in. and second was a 27 incher. Only one was under 20. I caught at least two dozen of the fingerlings (smelts?). I released every one of them. I am from Pittsburgh area and enjoyed the fishing the right way. Sun. was not as good. I only got one on sun. I only fished about half the time as sat. I saw plenty of fish in the waters. Out of the 10 total fish I landed, only 4 of them were not "fresh" fish. I used minifoos and maggots. Color - black and white. I did get one off of minifoo and minnow; that was the one caught today. Good luck to all and keep it real.

Report: John and I fished Elk Creek from Sterrettania down to Platz Road. We started at 7:30 and arrived at Platz Road @4:00. We fished with a couple of others till early afternoon, when they returned to Sterrettania. There were definately more fishermen than fish in that section of the Elk! The ice slush cleared off by about 11:00 AM and then the water turned from a light green to a cloudly-clear.

The fish are a mixed crowd, from 5 to 8 pounds. Some dark and torn up (probably been in the Creek for months) and some fresh out of the lake. John and I each caught 6 fish, and we really worked to get six. Lots and lots of smolts in the creek. we each must have caught over a hundred smolts. No suckers yet that far up the creek We heard others tell they gave up fishing the lower section of the Elk to fish the upper section and get away from the suckers. Turns out they traded an occasional sucker to a smolt on every other drift! Humm . . .

Had one fresh fist take me well into my backing! Bright and silver and full of fight. It will be some period to time before I forget that big fellow!

Oh yea folks, if you start running into smolts, crimp down your barbs. You actually will hook more steelhead, and it is much easier to release the smolts unharmed. Remember, these smolts are your future steelheads. Treat them tenderly.

From what we observed and the folks we talked with, there appears to be more fish below Folly's that above it.

Good luck, and remember to catch & release.

Report: The conditions at Elk Creek for Friday and Saturday (3-20 & 3-21) was as follows;

Water: medium depth and falling. Visibility about 50%, Temperature about 40 degrees F.

Fishing: Sporatic activity, when they were hot they were hot, when they were not, well you know how fickle steelies can be.

Bait: Minnows, (live or salted) also egg sacks.

Fish: Some fresh and some dark.

Mupears: i.e. out-of-town jerks who coMe UP here. (HEAR) and dis the fishing with their poor manners. Some were reportedly seen at Walnut Creek. None at Elk.

You can keep the creeks MUPEAR free with your own good example of the right stuff. Good sportsmenship is contagious.

I am particularly interested in knowing if anyone is doing any good with this thaw, what the stream conditions are and what is working. Report: I arrived at Elk Creek access at 9 oclock friday morning to find no one at all in the parking lot, a quick glance at the stream showed me why. ice was stacked 2 feet high on top the water. tried to walk up to the cascade hole to check it out but the ice looked to dangerous to try to cross, it looked froze as far as i could see anyways. from there we headed up stream to try to find a place anywhere we could get on! After an hour and a half of checking spots out the only place we found that looked like we could get the ice out was below the route 20 bridge it took over an hour to bust a spot out big enough that we could fish, but it was worth it. i fished from 1 oclock to 4:30 and caught 5 one was small about 3 pounds but the other 4 was nice all between 8.2 to 9.4 pounds! real fresh looking fish too! I came back to the same spot saturday morning about 9:30 and myself and 3 other guys cleared the hole out again, but cleared it even better than the day before.by the way i had the hole all to myself friday except for one other guy for an hour or two. It took us an hour to bust the ice out saturday. I caught 4 one small one 2 7 or 8 pounds and one 11.9 a beauty. real fresh fish most fish i caught have been in the creek less than a week. it`s a shame i didn`t register in Poor Richards steelhead contest because i was told it would of taken the lead. oh well thats fishin! Im coming back up this friday hope we get some warm weather this week to melt the ice. Anyone want to chat send me E mail until then FISH ON!

Report: Tried to fish Elk in the morning, but the ice was bad and its was windy. Went to Walnut around noon. Managed to fish some holes with no luck. I decided to walk down stream towards the mouth, took about ten steps and fell on my back on the ice, decided I had enough. Staggered out of the creek, drove home, got to my driveway, and noticed the wind had drifted my driveway shut. I tried to pull in my garage and got stuck. With all that it was still better than going to work.

My largest steelhead I ever caught was 32" and it wieghed just around 13 1/2 pounds it was the best exprerence I had ever had. The streams were clear after on sunday they were running muddy. I nailed the fish! I got about 25 in a few hours. The bait I was using was a white minifoo jig tipped with maggets. The other bait that was working was small pink strand egg sacks. Report: Fished from noon till about six from route 5 down to the access area. The creek was very colored whem I got there, but cleared up to a nice color by time I left. Picked up four steelhead, two of which were nice. All the fish were caught on orange sucker spawns. They all were caught in faster water. Nobody seemed to be fishing the faster stuff. I didn't until around 4:00, and that was when I started catching fish. Saw a lot of fish moving up the creek, a lot more then excpected. With the rain that is coming and the creek conditions, the creek should be very good next week or the weekend if the rain stops. That is good, because spring break is next week!!

Report: Randy and I fished upstream from the Legion Hole and caught three fish Sunday morning, all were bright and silver (straight out of the Lake). Randy landed a 2 1/2 and a 5 pounder, and mine was a little over 6 pounds.

Fishing was really slow, and after noon the river started to come up and the fish shut off! I guess the ole story is true that fish don't bite on a rising river. Ah believes it now!

I don't think the river will be prime again for a week or more with the current weather forecast. Oh well, need to tie flies anyway. Maybe the creeks off the Grand in Ohio will be productive this coming week. We certainly can't complain about the numbers of fish so far this year. They apparently have not gone very far up river yet, but I think they will in the next couple of weeks. Gads, but I'm tired of fishing in crowds.

Would like to thank each and every person in the PA Dept. of Nat. Resources and 3CU for all the fishing opportunities. I do wish that we here in Ohio had a similiar program instead of the pitance our DNR throws us and expects us to be happy with! We DO need to make the Ohio DNR independent from the idiots in the State Capital. Oh well . . .

As for lures and bait. When the water is dirty, use black anything (lures, flies, or streamers). When it clears up, NOTHING is more productive than fresh steelhead eggs. PA DNR has outlawed the sale of steelhead eggs, but some shops are selling brown trout eggs, with are just as productive. As for where to fish, buy John Bodners maps at the bait & tackle stores, and read John Nagy's book.

Keep'em tight!
