Report: Randy and I fished from the Legion
Hole up to Rt. 90. I landed three, Randy landed
two. All the fish were from six to eight pounds,
some dark and colored while a few were bright
chrome models! Not many chromes though.
Lot more fishermen & women than fish. More
suckers than steelhead. All the steelhead were in
the holes during the normal daylight periods when
the sun can shine down on the creek. But when the
sun is at a low angle, they did come out of the
holes to their reds.
Minnows (salty) and minnow patterns seemed to work
the best, with eggs or egg patterns next. Sure
could use some rain to bring in more fish
though.
Caught smolts at the I90 bridge. Remember to crimp
your barbs to give these little guys a better
chance of survival. These little guys are your
steelhead in two years, so treat them gentle!
Tight lines, and remember to catch and release as
much as possible.

Report: Fished Elk Creek early Wed. morning.
Fished from Folly's End down for about a mile. Had
little luck except for small smolts. A kind man
gave me two sucker spawn flies (thank you very
much) and I fished back up. I started hooking large
steelhead immediately! Having the right fly and
some local knowledge was a real help. Thurs.
morning I again started out early, it was very
COLD...my guides iced badly but I had plenty of
sucker spawn flies this time. I hooked a large
steelhead almost immediately but it broke off. I
hooked a ton of little smolt but on the way down it
was slow and cold. When the sun came out and I
headed back UP...it was much better. I saw fish,
hooked and landed fish and ended the morning with a
LARGE female....a great day. I found the other
fishermen friendly and helpful. I'll be back
again!

Report: Fished upper Elk for a short time
late on Wednesday. Fished the area upstream from
the West Road bridge (the road at McKean Exit of
I-79 that passes over Elk) up from the Elk Creek
Inn.
Weather was just above freezing with a cold wind.
Water was mostly clear in the riffles and murky
green in the deeper pools. With polarized lenses
you could see most areas of the creek except the
deepest pools. The creek is dropping but the level
was good Wednesday.
Observed a good number of fish. Most were in the
tail-outs of the pools, but some were in the
riffles spawning. They could be spotted with good
glasses.
Picked up one large aggressive male and missed one,
both on white sucker spawn size 14 flies (although
color did not seem to matter much).
Good Luck!

Report: I was the one who brought up the
question "What is a "muphere"". And yes I did ask
if they were like " The gortex hatch". Actually I
don't fish in gortex I fish in a Helly-Hansen
micro-weave jacket that cost me over $200...I can
afford it, and I'm not jealous.
The point I was making with the gortex hatch "joke"
was this...I have fished Ohio and Michigan streams
for steelhead for the last 25 years. I don't mind
new fishermen...and I'll be honest I don't love
them as there are already a lot of people on the
water. But, a well behaved newbee is a great thing.
I would and have offered advice, tackle, and
technique to many a person on the river. And I will
continue to do so. The person I refer to when I say
"gortex hatch" is the "fisherperson"(females too)
who are dressed up in a thousand dollar get up,
fish with a loop and a scott, have no streamside
manners. They leave trash all over, crowd you out
of the hole you're fishing, etc..... We don't need
to get mad at each other because someone is fishing
here and living there. It's a free country. Each
one of us has the right to fish where ever he/she
want's. Don't argue...Go fishing...It could be
worse, you could live in England where you can't
even fish some streams unless your the prince of
this or the duke of that.
Enjoy the fishing, put up with the crowds, or go
during the week. Find a diffrent stretch of water
to fish. All the streams I've seen reported on here
have thier "In Town" or "Easy Access" spots and of
course they'll be crowded. Buy yourself a good map
and spend one of those crowded saturdays driving up
and down the stream looking for those out of the
way spots...God knows I've found many on the Grand,
Conneaut, Elk...etc...Just don't ask me where they
are. If you do I'll tell you to buy a map.
That's just my two cents worth.

Report: Cant we all get along? I grew up
fishing lake Erie Streams for salmonids/steelhead,
therefore visit this site often to see how fishing
is in my home town waters. I have been extremely
disappointed at the amount of arguing that occurs
over locals-vs-nonlocal, well equipped
fisherman-vs-not well equipped, bait-vs-lure/ fly,
and etc. Great lakes steelhead fishing has gained
incredible popularity over the last few years. It
has attracted fisherman who differ in fishing
techniques, education, and socio/economic
backgrounds. It's popularity will only increase
with the increasing population and the declining
salmonid runs in the Pacific Northwest. Therefore,
instead of arguing we need to take measures to
educate the public on how to protect this valuable
resource. We can argue forever, but it wont get us
anywhere or stop the fisherman/woman from coming.
So, the next time you observe something that makes
you mad, take steps to educate yourself on the
matter and then lead by example. It's a long
process, but will go allot further than senseless
bickering.

Report: John and I fished Elk Creek from
Sterrettania down to Platz Road. We started at 7:30
and arrived at Platz Road @4:00. We fished with a
couple of others till early afternoon, when they
returned to Sterrettania. There were definately
more fishermen than fish in that section of the
Elk! The ice slush cleared off by about 11:00 AM
and then the water turned from a light green to a
cloudly-clear.
The fish are a mixed crowd, from 5 to 8 pounds.
Some dark and torn up (probably been in the Creek
for months) and some fresh out of the lake. John
and I each caught 6 fish, and we really worked to
get six. Lots and lots of smolts in the creek. we
each must have caught over a hundred smolts. No
suckers yet that far up the creek We heard others
tell they gave up fishing the lower section of the
Elk to fish the upper section and get away from the
suckers. Turns out they traded an occasional sucker
to a smolt on every other drift! Humm . . .
Had one fresh fist take me well into my backing!
Bright and silver and full of fight. It will be
some period to time before I forget that big
fellow!
Oh yea folks, if you start running into smolts,
crimp down your barbs. You actually will hook more
steelhead, and it is much easier to release the
smolts unharmed. Remember, these smolts are your
future steelheads. Treat them tenderly.
From what we observed and the folks we talked with,
there appears to be more fish below Folly's that
above it.
Good luck, and remember to catch & release.

Report: The conditions at Elk Creek for
Friday and Saturday (3-20 & 3-21) was as
follows;
Water: medium depth and falling. Visibility about
50%, Temperature about 40 degrees F.
Fishing: Sporatic activity, when they were hot they
were hot, when they were not, well you know how
fickle steelies can be.
Bait: Minnows, (live or salted) also egg sacks.
Fish: Some fresh and some dark.
Mupears: i.e. out-of-town jerks who coMe UP here.
(HEAR) and dis the fishing with their poor manners.
Some were reportedly seen at Walnut Creek. None at
Elk.
You can keep the creeks MUPEAR free with your own
good example of the right stuff. Good sportsmenship
is contagious.

Report: All creeks clear fish scattered, did
much better at Walnut. Steelhead were hitting on
minnies and Black Knats. Too many fishermen with
little or no common sense. While I was landing a
fish I would move one or two steps to your left or
right someone would step right in.

planning on coming up to Erie to fish for steelies
on Monday 22, and would appreceiate someone who is
going to be fishing there on Sat. or Sun. to give
me a report by email and let me know the conditions
and numbers of fish caught. I do not keep fish
caused I think they taste nasty but love to catch
them! If you would, also let me know the best
secret fly or bait you were using to catch them.
