Report: I fished Elk creek on saturday. I fished from the access area and up. I hooked and landed to shinny steelies. One was 26" and the other was 24.5". I got both of them of a black minifoo and 2 mags. The water was good but the wind made it chilly. Dress warm and good luck.

Location: Elk Creek
Date Fished: 1/27/99
Type of Report: Stream
Report: The water was high, fast and colored but not muddy. Slush in the morning made it difficult to drift the pools so I moved to pocket water and hooked six, landed zero. It was difficult to hold the fish once they got into the whitewater. Crossing rapids and running down the icy bank was an experience to get your heart racing but in hindsight, quite dangerous. New fish are in and I must say they are quite larger than the previous runs. All the fish I lost were 10 pounds or better. Egg patterns were the fare of the day #16 and #18. Hard to hold them big'uns with the small hooks. My partner went 11/16 with a noodle rod and jigs. He also dunked himself at 8:00am. Another memorable day on the tribs. FISH ON!

Report: I'm a first time steelhead fisherman. I'm taking a day off work Monday to try and luck into one. Could an experienced steelhead angler that has recently been at the streams give me a good location on a stream to try? Report: Wondered how far up the fish were on both Walnut and Elk. Fished both. Kicked a couple of fish out in the upper section of Elk. Nothing on upper Walnut. Had to walk a long way (downstream)at Elk to get into fish. Used glo balls with success. The fish on upper Elk are dark and don't have much fight in them. If you are fishing either stream, I'd suggest that you don't go too far past route 20. Not productive.

Type of Report: Stream
Report: The streams are open and although a bit fast on elk great at twentymile. Caught numerous fish on estaz egg patterns and minifoos. Between the two of us landed about 15 and lost twice as many. Largest was 9#. Believe it or not, there may be a fresh run as all the fish except one were bright silver. Elk should be prime 1/27 and 1/28 with the continued decrease in flow and hope for a fresh run there as well. Drove by walnut and noted it much like elk, a bit murky and fast. Best bet would be going this week before the weekend as there were few people on the streams.

If you are interested, many gobies are being taken down near Dobbins Landing and of the bayfront. Have there been any gobies or large sheephead caught in the rivers?

Report: Looked at Elk Creek and it was to high to fish. We went to Trout Run and my buddy Brian hooked one small jack about 17" on skeen. Myself I was fishing around 3 other men under the ice at the mouth having two nice ones on and loosing them. There where plenty of fish swiming up the creek in the morning. Skeen seemed to be the bait of choice. It will be a couple of days before the lines will be tight again. Good fishing to all!!

Report: I stopped by Walnut Creek this afternoon above Route 20. The creek is very high and muddy (higher than it was all Fall). The temperature is warm, it is raining lightly, and there is a lot of snow in the woods that has yet to melt. Although there were a few cars along the creek, if they were fishing I would have to think it is extremely difficult. Although there is a slight chance it will be fishable tomorrow, it is more likely that decent fishing conditions in the streams will not occur for several days.

Report: Started on Elk creek water was slightly off color. Three of us hooked 14 landed 4, average fish went about 7lbs. 3 on minnows, a few on mini-foos white and black tipped with 3 maggots and during the afternoon skein worked the best. The fish are there but you must be patient and persistent. If it rains or stays hot for several days the creeks will definately rise. The ice chunks on the banks are incredible (10 inches thick). Good luck and good fishing!

Report: The ice is out! Fished from 7:30 to 2:00 near route 20. The water was flowing fast and high with good color but not muddy. Found some fish in the slower runs but they were slow to hit and fought lethargically. Hooked 5 and landed 2 with a few spits. Fish seemed to go for egg patterns bounced off the bottom. Colors included;white, cream, chartreuse. Streamers were inneffective. It was nice to fish this bigger water for a change. The weekend should be great if they don't get the rain that is called for. Report: This morning I went down to see if the creeks were unfrozen yet and I found they were. Walnut is open from Route 5 on up and Elk is open from Whiteman's bridge up. The ice broke last night. There is a considerable amount of ice all jammed up at the mouths of both creeks and I think it will be a while before it melts. At Walnut it looks as though the ice is 10-12 ft thick with lots of braches and trees sticking out from the ice. It looks pretty impressive. I didn't get out fishing yet but I should be out by the end of the week now that it is open. Good Luck and tight lines.

Report: Allan, I understand your point on trying to utilize these fish that have been deemed trash fish. However, I don't know if eating these gobie fish is such a good idea, especially after reading Dave's post. I have had sheephead stew, and you are right, it is not bad. Instead of talking recipes, lets talk about where to catch them. ALL FISH, not just streams. I agree with you there. Post the Gobie Recipe, I want to check it out.

Report: To the man who said not to eat gobies, I cleaned them and pan fried them in oil and garlic. They turned out great! All the fish in the bay/lake are contaminated, you just have to watch how much you eat. I know people who have been eating fish for years out of lake erie, especially sheephead, and they are fine, better than when they started eating them. You eat what you want, don't feel the need to tell people how or what to eat/fish for. I posted here because the streams are frozen and the ice fishing has been sub-par, when everything picks up, I will take this discussion to the discussion page.
Good Day.

Report: I wouldn't recommend eating gobies. Don't throw any of them back either, and I will tell you why. They eat zebra mussels, which in itself is a good thing, but the problem is what the zebra mussels eat. They are filter feeders which means they filter the bad too (PCB's etc). The problem is the PCBs, heavy metals, and such become more concentrated in the Gobies, hence they are bad for you (to eat). If you are not worried about such pollutants, go ahead and eat them. The reason not to throw them back is that other larger game and food fish feed on the gobies. The higher up the food chain, the more concentrated these chemicals become. Remember DDT and the birds of prey? I think this is in line with fish commission recommendations, but I would check with them first. Now, lets take the discussions to the discussion page, and leave this page for stream reports.

I was feeding the gobies to my dog, and he seemed to like them, so did the heron on the north pier. Fished the bay on WED, caught some small BlueGills and Sunnies. To small to fillet, I cleaned them and tossed them in a blender and made fish burgers out of them.

Report: Took a drive to the Walnut Creek Access area to see what was going on. It was, as expected, bitterly cold. No one was fishing through the ice at Manchester hole, but it looked like someone had recently. No one was fishing through the ice in the marina, but again people had been and there were some holes through the ice. Two brave souls were fishing through the ice on the creek just upstream of the wall (it was too cold for me to venture out to see how they were doing).

The ice blocks the mouth, so you could not fish the lake from the mouth. There are ice dunes out about 20 feet into the water (which, for those who do not know, are very dangerous to walk on). There is slush and small icebergs on the lake. Unless is gets real windy, the lake should be freezing over soon.
