Location: Bay
Date Fished: 4/30/99
Type of Report: Bay
Report: Fished about 6 hours and caught 6 real nice largemouth, all in the 2-3 pound range, and lost a few others, all on a blue & white 6" Rapala. Not a smallmouth in sight !! No one seemed to be setting the world on fire, nobody stayed in one place for very long.
Is anyone finding smallmouth in the bay and where ?

Location: Foot of Cascade St.
Date Fished: 4-25-99
Type of Report: Bay
Report: First used a plastic shad (the one with the tail that moves like a real fish tail but the color was perch), got one hit on the first cast. Then used a small white strike king mini spinerbait, got a hit by a bass then I had a big fat steelhead (or some kind of a salmon) which threw the hook on the jump. I was unable to get any fish in, which was sad. Good luck.

Report: I just have to clear something up for some of you people. They do not stock Rainbows in Elk or any of the other tribs. They only Stock browns and Stealhead smolts. And their are not any natives in any of them either. So No you did not catch a small rainbow, what you did in fact catch was a smolt that will one day be back to the stream much bigger.

Report: Fished at Elk and Walnut creeks. We caught a few legal size browns and a million fingerlings, but no steelhead. I can't find any on the west side. 20 mile is the only stream that I know of that has a few fish left in it. I thought with the rain we had, more would come in. Maybe they're done for the year.

Location: Elk Creek

Type of Report: Stream
Report: Fished the Elk Sunday. The Elk surprisingly was not impacted by all the rain, as the rain must have missed the lake shore area (for the most part). Behind Folleys there were a few fellows catching 2-4 pound silver and colored Steelhead. The creek was green and fairly clear. It was up maybe a foot at most over "normal" flow.

Down below Girard it was higher and dirty brown. Didn't catch anything down there, and didn't see anyone catch anything (except stockers).

Remember to crimp the barbs on your hooks so you don't tear up the stockers mouths! These little guys are a pain, but in two years they will be the big ones; providing you don't kill them before their time!

THOUGH THE HIGH WATER WOULD BE IDEAL, THE STEELHEAD JUST ARE NOT TAKING THE SUCKER SPAWN OR JIGS.I DIDN'T TRY ANY THING ELSE THIS COULD BE MY MISTAKE .BUT, I USUALLY DO WELL WITH THESE ; AT THIS TIME OF YEAR UNDER THOSE CONDITIONS.

Location: Elk Creek
Date Fished: 4/8/99
Type of Report: Stream
Report: Fished at Folleys from 9am to 1pm. Water was low and clear and steelhead were in the fast water at the head of the pool. Fish were spooky, had hits on borax cured egg clusters, dried minnows, and one lady caught one on worms. Bait was hard to use because smolts were everywhere and attacked anything (including spinners). Some guys with fly tackle caught a few with nymphs and sucker spawn. I tried a rubber egg cluster(that the smolts couldn't rip up) and hung a nice male. But they were tenative biters and I ended up losing all the steelhead. Moved below route 20 after lunch with similar results. Fish in deep fast pools but reluctant to hit bait. Smolts and suckers everywhere competeing for bait. Hung one nice male on egg clusters and saw a few others but couldn't get them to take bait or lures. The water is warm (50+F.) so leave the underware at home. Minnows and weighted nympths are probably best bets to get passed smolts and down to the steelhead.

Type of Report: Bay
Report: For those of you who are waiting for the small mouth fishing to start, it's here. They are starting to stage at the normal spots, deep sides of the drop-offs. Hitting the usual plastics, and slow is good.
The largemouths are still hitting good, and are working their way shallow.
After this next weather pattern goes through, the fishing should explode.

Report: Well, it was my first time ever fishing for Steelhead... and Wow, what a treat it was. I'm an avid trout fisherman further south in PA, and I finally got to make the trip, and go for some Steelies. The water was low and clear, and hot and sunny.

In short, I just wanted to know if I did well or not for this time of year. I hooked 5 , and landed 3 , with the biggest about 28 inches (approx. 9 lbs). One of the fish I lost was bigger, and the other who knows. I didn't see anyone else land a single fish all day... except my buddy who was with me also got 3 and lost 4.

I am AMAZED at these strong Steelheads, and can't wait to do it again. Anyone with any tips , feel free to email. Since I'm new to this, I don't even know the best times, or seasons to fish. When exactly can you fish for Steelhead, with trout season on the way and all.

Thanks to all who respond. I hope to hear from some of you experts. Cya

Report: Hooked into over 12 HUGE Stealhead (>5 lbs each). Landed only one due to my inexperience with light tackle (#6 fly rod, 6 to 8 lb tippet). Used sucker spawn and bead headed nymphs. Others were using live maggots on a #12 hook with a spinning outfit. Large holes and rapids were holding fish in a spawn mode. Water was approx. 50 degrees.

Report: Fished Elk Creek from 10:30-3:00. Caught some nice rainbows and brown trout but no steelhead. Saw two others caught: one (7lbs)about 400 yds upstream from Folly's campground on a brown fly and the other (about 7-8 lbs)was below the Rt 5 tubes. We parked on the east side of the creek in the fish commission gravel lot and walked straight back to the creek. This area was the best compared to going upstream. It was pretty crowded from that point downstream to the mouth. We did not see anyone else catching any steel heads. We used minifoos, salted minnows, mealworms, maggots and rooster tails. The brown trout were killing the 1/8 oz. white rooster tails. The rainbows liked the orange minifoo tipped with a maggot.

Report: Bass fishing was the best I have had in a long time. All large mouth, all in and around weeds in 4 to 8 feet. Cloudy skies helped. Boated over thirty apiece, with two pike also beeing caught, one well over thirty inches.
Water is clear and you can see fish swimming in shallower water. temp. is 52.
Saw lots of crappie being caught by other anglers, and one nice steel head caught by a guy on his crappie rod.
No small mouth.
Good fishing.

Report: A crappie is a panfish like a bluegill but the crappie gets bigger then a bluegill. They are usually held by the mouth like a bass. The back of the fins is round like a pike's fin. There are nothing like a gobie. Crappie eats minnows, worms, and other food that bluegill eats. I have no idea how they got that name. I never ate one before but I heard that they are one of the best fish to eat. Best place to catch them are lily pond, lagoons, and any other places with brush piles.
