Report: just got back and settled, so sorry for late report. fished with a couple co workers for a 3 day vacation. had a great time and even managed a few fish on the last 2 days. the fish numbers are down but fish are available if you cover water and search. the fish seemed to be spread out througout the stream, the "usual" holes just didnt produce like years past. actually the first day was really tough as we targeted the upper and lower sections of elk without so much as one fish between us. 2nd day we fished and walked middle sectin and finally managed a few fish apiece. this was a learning expierience for me even though Ive fished this creek for the last 6 years. maybe this warm weather caused a early spawn as most fish were either spawned out or ready to spawn. eggsacks seemed to pick up the 7 fish I caught over the last 2 days, my friends had some success on olive whooly buggers as well as egg imitations in pink and white. the fishings different the last few years but in exchange it seems the crowds are down as well which makes for a more enjoyable day in my book. BTW, had a great perch dinner at joe roots and looking forward for our march trip.
upper walnut only produced a one fish between us but we really didnt explore it as much as we could have, if I had a couple extra days we would have covered more water.
fish on

Report: A wonderful day to be steelheading, I only saw 2 other guys fishing all day, and the fish were biting. Covered nearly 3 miles of stream and dealt with plenty of slush, but I had nearly 20 hookups, landed 8 fish, to my surprise several of them were fresher and had a lot of fight. Caught all fish on either minnows or jigs tipped with maggots. Tight lines all!

Report: Did pretty good today fishing all over. Not a lot of fish around, but enough to make the trip worth it if you cast in the right places and walk a lot. All fish caught on egg patterns and flesh flies.
Parked by the pond on upper 20 mile, couldnt believe the amount of trash I saw. It was disgusting, I will be taking a trash bag with me next time. C'mon people clean up after yourselves!!!!

They were the most beat up I have ever seen, some looked like old salmon. The weather reports chased us off the stream for todays fishing.Bummer.

Report: Just because YOU can't see the fish doesn't mean they aren't there. You can still catch fish even if they aren't visible.
And I don't care how much snow Erie gets the streams will be fishable before next weekend. Just check the stream gauges.
Fished the west side this week. Green water, very cold, hits were nearly undetectable unless u were jigging. Also got some on egg sacs. Not much fight in most of them. More of a wet boot than a steelbow.

Report: Lower Elk was on fire today. What a way to ring in the New Year. Started off at around 9. Not a soul around. Water was high, but with decent visibility. Numerous hook ups within the first hour. Things only got better when my buddy showed up. We lost count of how many fish (many fresh) we caught. Many doubles throughout the late morning and early afternoon. Elk never disappoints. Neither does Center Pinning. Based on the weather forecast, I'm really glad we fished today. It could be a while before we fish again. As usual, Mum and Buubow stayed home.

Report: This was my 3rd trip ever fishing for steelhead. I have hooked some, but never landed them until this trip. I managed to land two(with the help of a net this time) 24" and 25". I still didnt really enjoy the fight as much as i should have as i was nervous to lose the fish the whole time lol.
I am not positive if it was the time of year or what, but i have seen tons of fish my other 2 trips, only saw 3 fish total the whole day. The water was pretty discolored which didnt help. It got a little darker as the day went on as well.
I drive from pittsburgh and got rained out the two weeks before that i was trying to make the trip.
I caught the female while drifting a yellow trout magnet tipped with a meal worm. I got the male bouncing a 1/16 oz white maribou jig tipped with a salmon egg on the bottom below a small drop off.
I see others talking about the bad population of fish... does this have truth, or was i just trying at the wrong time of the year?

Report: Skulldragger5 has hit the conditions right.
We fished from daylight to dark, lower middle, upper Elk. Lower part of walnut.Only saw 3 fish being carried, saw no one catch a fish!
We talked to several people and they had the same experience. When we went to lower Walnut there was only about 15 people there including the wall and stop sign hole.Maybe 6 cars in the parking lot.(highly unusual)Which speeks volumes! Couldn't see any fish. The were no fish to be seen. Take the reports on here with a grain of salt.Things just are not as good as some want you to believe. We even went to Poor Richards bait shop and we were the only ones there!!! There is something definatly wrong with the steelhead fishery. Everyone seems to want to sugar coat whats going on, or even that there is a problem, if our fish commission won't stand up and be responsible. Maybe its time to head to New York?

Report: Went to the Manchester hole today and entirely and completely blown out. Water is up at least a foot or two higher than usual and very, very muddy. Don't waste your time, very poor conditions. Not even fishable right now. Snow that they're calling for Sunday and Monday will definitely not help. Probably take until next weekend for it to lower and clear up.

Report: Fished upper Elk on Friday. Water was green, murky in deep runs and clear in riffles. Melting snow increased flow in the afternoon. Fish were scattered and seemed to be in the slow sections of pools more than runs. Found a nice pod in a small trib that was fishable because of rising water.

Hope to be on the Ohio streams in the new year as the water drops.

Happy New Year.

Report: Friday was a decent day; my buddy and I caught around a half dozen between the two of us, plus another guy in our section landed at least 4.

Elk was a little off-color, but got muddier as the day went on (causing the fishing to be poor). At 5, the water had risen almost a foot. Conditions Sat. & Sunday should be better if the stream drains quickly.

Happy New Year's to all...

Report: Something needs to change. . .a few years ago, and i mean a few (2008 or so), there were hundreds of fish in each hole the entire way up through upper elk and now? Something is wrong when you fish walnut and see only 2 people below the bridge. Where are the fish? Worst trip I have ever had and probably won't be back for quite a long time, what a waste of money and optimism. Landed 3 in 2 days of fishing hard, literally only saw 2 other fish caught, and never saw 1 single fish while glassing through the holes for them. One word can describe it all, depressing.

Report: Hit a few smaller tribs in the AM with a buddy. There were a few fish around, but not in big numbers. Had some decent action on single eggs and power worms on the ones we could find.

Went to upper Elk in the PM. Water was real nice, with limited visibility in the deeper runs and holes, so no sight fishing and couldn't really tell how many fish were there. Had decent action on the same things as above.

Report: Traveled to Eastern Tribs in hopes of some fresh chrome. Fish were in the usual holes and sparse in the runs; however, the numbers were much lower than just a month ago. Hooked more than a dozen then and only a few today. By now the fish have seen everything in your tackle box so I suggest stealth and a good drift. Counted 10+ cars in each spot along 20 mile....arrgh.

Good luck all. Happy New Year.

Report: Had an awesome day picking off strays in various holes. Spent my time walking and casting to riffles with floats and light tippet. Walked probably 4-5 enjoyable miles. Hooked up with 27 yesterday with most being female. Largest was a nice 9 1/2 lb female. Fish were not easy to catch you had to be very precise with the presentation and drift without drag. It was my first trip this year and was a blast. Fish count is still not like years past. All were released to fight another day. The lampreys must be awful as just about every fish I caught had marks on them. Tight lines and jumping steel.
