Report: We ice fished a trib all day and had good numbers again. Bite lighter than last week but good in morning until around noon. Hookups on jigs, single eggs, and a few on skein to my surprise, water under ice of course was crystal clear. Most fish hit jig or eggs within 3 seconds of lowering them in water, even skein. Drilled many holes and we changed techniques and holes every few minutes to keep hooking up.

Used camera under the ice and many fish in deep pockets, but more in less than 2 feet of water stacked on shelves and against banks. Most hookups came in shallowest of water with offering 6-12" under ice.

Coolest thing about this type of clear water fishing...you can't see the strike coming until it happens. Have to be quick on the draw. Very exciting fishing, and just pure fun. Long fights on short rods.

     2/5/2010 11:25:00 AM   Report ID: 24928

Report: Had a blast ice fishing a trib today for Steelhead. Myself and another angler nearby hooked fish from 8-130. Both of us were well into high numbers of fish and there were times where we couldn't keep fish off our lines. I haven't had a high number day like this through the ice in 10 years.

Fish hooked most of day on jigs with the other gentleman using Swedish Pimples with minnows. Fish also struck single eggs, mealworms, and even Jigging Rapalas, with one very large fish lost on a Jigging Rap, after a 5-6 minute fight. All fish were seen striking jigs/bait less than 2 feet under the hole.

Many fish in the 27-30" range and fish were aggressive until around 1:00. Really suprised to see a lot of interest in the Jigging Rapalas.

With the weather outlook looking grim for any open water, I'll be doing this until something changes. Too much fun.

Report: The bait shop reports are accurate. The temperature today is 30 degrees so any melt will be minimal. On the plus side, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission today stocked the “gravel pit” near Fairview with trout. Then, they stopped by Trout Run and loaded 100-breeder steelhead into the empty tanks for a trip to the hatchery to strip eggs and milt. I got a video clip of the netting if you are interested. I also have some video of upper Elk Creek and lower Walnut Creek taken on February 1. Drop me an email jyork@storytrax.com and I will send you the links.

Report: Hello,
Myself and a few friends were also planning about a 4hr drive to fish up there this upcoming weekend. I made a few calls today to a couple baitshops and I got the same answer. With weather being the way it has been, it looks as if everything will stay frozen for about another 10 days they said. We decided to take their word and canceled till times seem to of gotten better. Good luck if you all go!

Report: Went against our better judgement and drove 3 hours to erie, headed up to 16 mile to low open water and about 5 fish for the whole creek, a few takers but not worth hanging around. On the way home we stopped at upper elk to find some open water and few fish swimming back and forth around the iced edges. Slush and ice chunks coming down stream slamming into your line along with the three seconds of unfrozen line were enough for us to decide to wait until March to return. Better luck to everyone else who is crazy enough to be out in the single digits in the pursuit of steel... anyone know of any steelheaders anonymous groups around?

Report: Fishing on 1/28/2010 in slush, freezing temperatures overnight and as of noon Friday, Elk creek is 99% locked up from the Rt. 5 bridge to the lake. Looks like some flow upstream from the Rt. 5 bridge, but I would surmise the majority of the creek will be locked with ice by the end of day.

Water Conditions: Icing quickly on edges, becoming slushy

     1/28/2010 11:30:28 PM   Report ID: 24917

Report: Drove six hours through the night on snowy, treacherous interstates with whiteouts and jack-knifed tracker trailers (what usually is a 3.5 hr drive) and was questioning whether today's fishing was worth risking my life...and of course that was an easy answer: of course. :-)

Fished a very slushy lower elk creek today from 10 am till dark...brutal cold and wind. Watched the stream freeze more and more throughout the day, only hooked and landed two...but I think they hooked in merely to escape the slush! Saw three other guys leaving lower elk in the morning, it was awesome to be on the water with no one else in sight in either direction for the entire day! I think I am going to lay low until the next good melt. It was nice to see some chromies moving through, something to look forward too soon.

Report: we did not leave till 7 to make the 2 hour drive just to cold. fished upper elk, the water had a good green tint and was falling, by the end of the day you could spot the "black shadows". the fish were not real active until hooked then they came alive. a friend and i probably landed 10-12 with several more hook ups. some fresh fish, some old fish, fish were in pre spawn condition, all fish were taken on egg patter flies and released. there was not a lot of ice on the creek but that was yesterday, the fish like i said were not really active.

Date Fished: 1/27/09
Location: Small and large trib
Water Conditions: Slush, clear, green, and stained
Posted By:  "joebaker79"
     1/28/2010 11:52:20 AM   Report ID: 24915

Report: Heavy slush dominated the morning and ice is reforming already in the slower holding water. Fish caught in pools and against banks, generally on the seams of the slow and fast water. More important than what jig or what fly/bait was being float fished was finding where fish were holding in water where you couldn't see the fish. In large holes where fish are no longer stacked up in every inch, locating the exact drift fish are holding in is a little tougher. Jigging is a nice "search lure" in this scenario.

With cold temps forecast for Friday the weekend will be extremely tough fishing as the ice and slush will take over in a hurry.

Report: Headed back up to fish Elk on the 27th and to hopefully recover a flyrod I left near the parking lot. Anybody find one please let me know. I posted this in the lost and found forum to but I am desperate as I leave to head back home to Alaska this Monday.

What kind of conditions can I expect? Either way I am making the 3.5 hour drive! Don't get to many chances to fish with my brother anymore.

Thanks everyone
